History

Hamad International Airport (HIA), IATA: DOH, ICAO: OTHH, also known as "Hamad International Airport" (Maṭār Ḥamad al-Duwalī), is Qatar's primary international airport and the home base of Qatar Airways. Located east of Doha, it replaced the former Doha International Airport, becoming the country's main airport and one of the busiest in the Middle East.

Originally named New Doha International Airport (NDIA) during its construction phase, HIA was initially slated to open in 2008. However, after several delays, it commenced operations on April 30, 2014, with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight from the old Doha International Airport. All airlines, including Qatar Airways, fully transitioned to the new airport by May 27, 2014. The airport is named in honour of the previous Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

By the late 20th century, Doha International Airport (DIA) was over 70 years old and required significant upgrades. Due to limited space, expanding DIA, particularly adding a second runway, was challenging. Planning for a new, state-of-the-art airport began in 2003, with construction starting in 2005. The new site is located 5kilometress (3.1 mi) east of the old airport, covering 3,600 hectares (9,000 acres). HIA was designed to accommodate the increasing volume of traffic, with an initial capacity of 29 million passengers annually, triple the previous airport's volume. Upon full completion, it is projected to handle 93 million passengers per year, making it the second-largest airport in the region, after Dubai.

Bechtel was awarded the contract for the airport's development, overseeing the design, construction management, and project management. The terminal and concourses were designed by the architecture firm HOK. Cargo operations began on December 1, 2013, with the first Qatar Airways Cargo flight arriving from Europe. Passenger operations started on April 30, 2014, with ten airlines. Qatar Airways and other airlines fully moved to HIA on May 27, 2014. In 2016, HIA was ranked the 50th busiest airport globally, serving 37,283,987 passengers, a 20.2% increase from 2015. By 2019, the airport saw a further 12.4% increase in annual passenger traffic.
